- Stand in front of a mirror so that you can see your entire body from head to toe.
- Stand on one leg and do a small squat.
- Are your hips staying level? I.e. Weak gluteals may cause your hip to drop down on the opposite side to the leg you are standing on.
- Does your knee wobble in towards your other knee? This is also a sign that you have weak gluteals and quadriceps.
- Analysis: If you notice your knee “diving” inward or your opposite hip dropping, it usually indicates that the gluteal muscles on your standing leg aren’t strong enough to hold your pelvis steady under load.
2. Single leg sit to stand (progression from no. 1)
- Sitting on a kitchen chair with one foot on the ground.
- Go from sit to standing 16x without fatiguing.
- Try to use the principles from exercise no. 1 i.e. keep your hips level and a steady knee tracking over your mid foot.
- Analysis: Difficulty doing several repetitions or finding yourself “plopping” back down into the chair suggests a lack of endurance in the glutes and quadriceps. It shows that your muscles fatigue quickly when asked to control your body weight.

Side bridge/plank (testing your trunk strength, which is often impaired in people with hip pain)
- Holding a side plank on your elbow and feet.
- Analysis: If your hips sag toward the floor or you feel your body shaking significantly before 30 seconds, it points to weakness in the lateral trunk muscles and the gluteus medius, which are vital for side-to-side stability.
4. Single leg hop
- Standing at one point. Measure how far you can hop forwards on the floor.
- Analysis: A short hop (less than ⅓ of your height) or an unstable landing (where you have to step to catch your balance) shows a lack of “explosive” power and joint control, often seen when the hip extensors and rotators aren’t functioning at their peak.
