Physiotherapy for Mastitis | Fast, Gentle Relief
Physiotherapy for mastitis offers a gentle, effective way to relieve pain and support breastfeeding recovery. Mastitis is a painful and often overwhelming condition that affects many breastfeeding women. At Inner Strength Bayside, we understand how distressing mastitis can be, especially during what is already a physically and emotionally intense period of early motherhood. Our Women’s Health Physiotherapists are here to support you with evidence-based, non-invasive treatment options – including therapeutic ultrasound – to ease your symptoms and help you recover quickly.
What is Mastitis?
Mastitis refers to inflammation of the breast tissue, often accompanied by infection. It commonly occurs during the breastfeeding period and may develop suddenly. The inflammation is usually due to milk not being properly drained from the breast, leading to milk stasis, which causes blocked ducts and subsequent swelling, pain, and redness. If not addressed promptly, mastitis can lead to infection and, in rare cases, abscess formation.
Signs and Symptoms of Mastitis
If you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms, it’s important to seek early treatment:
- Pain or tenderness in one area of the breast
- Swelling, warmth, and redness
- A hard lump or wedge-shaped area in the breast
- Fever or flu-like symptoms, including chills and fatigue
- Reduced milk flow or a fussy baby who is struggling to feed
- General feeling of being unwell (malaise)
Early recognition and intervention are key to preventing complications and supporting continued breastfeeding.
What Causes Mastitis?
Mastitis is usually caused by inadequate milk drainage, leading to milk leakage into surrounding tissue and triggering an immune response. In some cases, bacteria from the baby’s mouth or the mother’s skin can enter the milk ducts and cause infection.
Common risk factors for mastitis include:
- Skipped or irregular feeds
- Sudden changes in feeding patterns (e.g. baby sleeping longer)
- Using dummies/pacifiers or bottles that interfere with natural feeding cues
- Wearing tight or restrictive bras and clothing
- Delayed onset of milk coming in after birth
- Poor latch or attachment during feeds
- Sleeping on your stomach or applying pressure to the breasts
- Overfeeding from one side or excessive pumping
Physiotherapy and Mastitis: A Gentle, Effective Option
One of the most effective, non-invasive treatments for mastitis we offer at Inner Strength Bayside is therapeutic ultrasound.
What is Therapeutic Ultrasound?
Therapeutic ultrasound involves the use of sound waves that generate deep heat within the breast tissue. This can:
- Improve circulation
- Soften blocked ducts
- Reduce inflammation and swelling
- Break down bacterial biofilms, reducing bacterial activity
- Support the natural drainage of milk
You’ll likely feel only a gentle warmth during treatment, and many women notice a reduction in symptoms after just one session. Ultrasound is best applied as early as possible after symptoms develop and we will always do what we can to see you on the day of first noticing symptoms.
In some cases, antibiotics may still be required – especially if the mastitis is infective – but therapeutic ultrasound offers a valuable alternative or complementary treatment. Many women prefer this low-intervention approach when trying to avoid unnecessary medications while breastfeeding.
Additional Tips for Managing Mastitis at Home
While ultrasound therapy is highly effective, there are also self-care strategies you can implement to support your recovery:
- Apply a warm pack before feeding to promote milk flow
- Feed immediately after ultrasound treatment to clear the affected area
- Use cold packs after feeding to reduce inflammation
- Avoid massaging toward the nipple – this may worsen inflammation. Instead, use gentle lymphatic drainage techniques in the direction away from the nipple (our Physiotherapists can demonstrate this to you)
- Avoid pumping to “empty the breast” – this can increase oversupply. Express only for comfort or as needed by your baby
- Discuss anti inflammatories or paracetamol with your pharmacist to help manage pain and inflammation
When to Seek Help
If your symptoms worsen, persist for more than 24–48 hours, or you develop a high fever, consult your GP or lactation consultant. Physiotherapy can be started in conjunction with other care providers and often helps reduce reliance on antibiotics.
